Under the guise of a project for my animals and society class, I have decided to be vegan for a month (to start). The next four weeks will bring recipes, restaurant-visiting, thoughts and frustrations, and lots of writing.
For the past two and a half years I have been:
pes·ca·tar·i·an \ˌpe-skə-ˈter-ē-ən\ one whose diet includes fish but no meat.
Though veganism has always been in the back of my mind (since one of my oldest friends went animal-free in 11th grade), it wasn’t until recently that I actually considering making the change for myself.
Over the last few weeks I have been playing this ridiculous game of juggling. What is more important to me? Being cognizant of suffering or eating food that comes from 100 miles of my home? Respecting people when they cook me a homemade meal or standing by what I think is morally correct? Then it hit me. Somewhere between watching the documentary Earthlings and reading about seahorses caught in bycatch (in Johnathan Safran Foer’s Eating Animals), I needed to test the waters of veganism.
Here goes nothing…
